When the rays of the sun hit the top of your swimming pool water, the sparkle and shine combine for an amazing and beautiful scene within your backyard. Pools, however, require maintenance and attention throughout the swim season to ensure everything looks great and the water itself is clean and healthy.

When it comes to monitoring your pool water, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when going through the process. For starters, look at what is going into your pool. Overhanging trees can lead to leaves, sticks and debris getting into your pool. Fields, the neighbors’ trash, and other articles have a knack for finding their ways into open water.

Now when it comes to the human elements, dead skin, along with soap and spray residues, a lot of times those can’t be prevented. But what you can do is stay on top of the cleaning and maintenance of your swimming pool. The longer leaves and the like sit at the bottom of your pool, the worse off your water color will turn out and could lead to staining.

Once all of the garbage is taken care of, and you have regular cleaning and skimming under control, the next step in ensuring you have the perfect water in which to swim is checking the chemical levels.
Before you add anything, make sure your water level is at the right height. Pool chemicals rely on ratios based on total water volume, so fill your pool if it’s low. Next, measure the pH balance of your pool followed by checking your chlorine levels. If you are unsure or have any questions, contact a professional before you add any chemicals to you pool.
